rotary trail
Rotary Trail is the Rotary Club of Birmingham’s 100th anniversary gift to the Birmingham community. Completed in 2015, the 3.5-million dollar project transformed a vacant railroad right-of-way, or “cut,” into a pleasantly-landscaped, four-block walking/running/biking pathway.
The trail’s economic impact has been tremendous, with millions of dollars invested in the once blighted area. The trail and surrounding areas have become a destination for visitors and residents alike and are among the most photographed places in Birmingham.
Rotary Trail is the heart of the Jones Valley Trail Corridor within the Red Rock Trail System that will connect the 9,000-acre Red Mountain Park in the Oxmoor Valley to Railroad Park, and via the Rotary Trail, to Sloss Furnaces Historic landmark. Long-range plans see the trail system connecting Sloss Furnaces to the Ruffner Mountain preserve in Eastern Birmingham.
In 2015, Rotary Trail was awarded a Governor’s Award for Water Conservationist of the Year. Prior to the development of the trail, storm water run-off in the abandoned railroad cut flowed directly into Village Creek, carrying debris and other pollutants into the city’s water system. A new filtration system was put in place to improve the quality of the run-off in the right-of-way.
We invite the community to join us in continued investment and improvements. To learn more, click Friends of Rotary Trail below.
